Despite myriad challenges from COVID-19, The EPS team at Vizient has had a number of successes advancing human and environmental health:
- The biggest success in 2021 was the introduction of Vizient’s Environmentally Preferred Sourcing contract language. The new Environmentally Preferred Sourcing exhibit will be implemented in virtually all (96%) of medical/surgical product categories to encourage suppliers to create the safest and cleanest products without the use of chemicals of concern or excess waste. This language was constructed in collaboration with Kaiser Permanente, one of the leaders in healthcare sustainability to show industry alignment. As one member from Vizient’s Environmental Advisory Council stated, “Vizient is single handily transforming the health care market”. See below for more.
- The EPS team has also launched a new member charge: EPS program update: Charge to prioritize key environmentally preferred initiatives (vizientinc.com). The Environmental Advisory Council who influences over $17.6 billion in collective annual spend, is encouraging all Vizient members to bolster their focus on prioritizing products that are safer for human and environmental health. Members of the council are sustainability experts who are committed to leveraging purchases to prioritize products and services that have a reduced impact on the environment. Along with other Vizient members, they seek to make smarter and safer purchasing decisions associated with positive health outcomes.
